The RPC Movement:  Respect Yourself, Check Yourself, Protect Yourself

Rize and Shine Inc. is a 501(c)3 non profit organization that has created an innovated awareness campaign entitled: "Respect Yourself, Check Yourself, Protect Yourself", also known as the RCP movement. The objective is to improve the health of communities by encouraging healthy and responsible behavior (i.e. getting tested, practicing safe sex, abstinence, spreading awareness,etc.).
For more information on the Movement: Call the hotline: 1-888-RCP-1SELF (888-7272-1735)

Is there a home HIV testing kit?

There is a home test kit for HIV and Hepatitis C available at some drugstores and online. You have to prick your finger and send the blood sample to a lab to be tested. You call the lab a few days later for results. They also provide anonymous counseling over the phone. One brand name is Home Access, and costs around $44. However, we highly recommend going to a clinic for HIV testing. Just in case you test positive it is much better to have some immediate support, like someone knowledgeable and caring to talk to about it.

So the best option, we think, is to visit your local health department or clinic for STD testing. Most clinics offer free or low-cost, confidential testing for HIV and other STDs. And they can treat you if your test comes back positive and help you reduce your risk for getting or spreading infections in the future.

To find a clinic near you, check the yellow pages under "Clinics" or "Family Planning," or locate a Planned Parenthood Health Center near you at 1-800-230-PLAN (7526). You can also find a testing center near you through MTV's Fight for Your Rights: Protect Yourself.

Got a question about STDs? Call the CDC's national hotline at 1-800-227-8922, open 24/7. (from the wonderful site www.sexetc.org ) out of Rutgers University.
